Johan is the Deputy Managing Director of AHAM Asset Management Berhad (“AHAM Capital”), where he has overall management oversight over the Strategy Department, Public Sector and HNWI Business and Personal Wealth sales channels, as well as the Innovation Lab.
Apart from his role at AHAM Capital, Johan is also responsible for founding and developing AHAM Capital’s Private Equity subsidiary, Bintang Capital Partners, which he leads as its Executive Director and Managing Partner.
Prior to joining AHAM Capital in June 2016, Johan joined Affin Investment Bank Berhad in 2012, and played an instrumental role in leading the merger between Affin Investment Banking Group and Hwang DBS Investment Banking Group in 2014, which saw the creation of the Affin Hwang Capital Group.
Johan has more than two decades of experience in the financial services industry, working in various fields including corporate restructuring, leverage loan investments, distressed debt investments and private equity investments.
He spent more than 10 years of his career on the investment buy side, working for HSBC Group in Malaysia, and prior to that in the United Kingdom for various leading investment houses including HIG Capital, Highland Capital and Babson Capital. Johan started his career at Arthur Andersen’s (which subsequently became Ernst & Young’s) Corporate Restructuring division in London.
Johan holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the London School of Economics, which he attended as a Chevening Scholar. He is also a Fellow Chartered Accountant (FCA) with the Institute of Chartered Accountant of England and Wales, as well as a Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA) charter holder.
In 2012, Johan was appointed Honorary Treasurer of the Malaysian Leprosy Relief Association (MaLRA), an association founded in 1959 to work closely with communities in Malaysia to alleviate the suffering of leprosy patients and their families.
In 2018, Johan was made a Trustee of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Foundation by the Minister of Education, Malaysia. The Foundation was created in 1966 with the aim of providing support to young scholars who aspire to become future leaders of Malaysia.
